Dec'17 Elon Musk, Gala, Turkey, iyzico, Insider and more

November is an interesting month for Turks. All the talk about Thanksgiving and Turkeys puts our Google alerts in overdrive. This past November, we saw more than just news about birds. Turkish startups merged and were acquired. Elon Musk came to Ankara. And even beyond the Bosphorus, Turkish techies who founded a vision systems company in Silicon Valley, pointed to the talent and potential that lies in this country that is often labeled at the “crossroads of Europe and Asia.” Read on for the details in our all-Turkey edition. Our take away from all of it: Turkey is more than just its politics. What doesn’t make the daily headlines is the young minds, both men and women, who are not only launching, but coming to Turkey to launch companies in FinTech, AdTech, and virtual reality. We’ve got game in Istanbul.

Correction: Last month we noted that Goldman Sachs was interested in acquiring Hepsiburada.com. Goldman Sachs is helping the company look for buyers. We regret the error.

Holy Holography! CY Vision raises $7 million

Virtual reality ranks high in the “what’s to come in tech” category. CY Vision, a Silicon Valley based firm that specializes in creating computer images – holographic technology, is on it. The firm just raised $7 million in Series A funding. Vestel Venture led the round, joined by Intel Capital. Why do we care? The founders are Hakan Urey and Orkun Oguz who have been working on display technology for the past 20 years, some of that time in Turkey.
